Hazaribagh is a city and municipality in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand, established in 1886 and now notified as a Municipal Corporation. It serves as the divisional headquarters of North Chotanagpur division. The name Hazaribagh is derived from ‘hazar’ meaning ‘thousand’ and ‘bagh’ meaning ‘tiger’, though it is also popularly known as the ‘City of thousand gardens’. Municipal administration began here in 1865, making it one of the oldest local self-government bodies in India. Since independence, various public welfare works have been carried out, including development of sanitation facilities, parks, markets, and roads. The municipality continues to work towards making Hazaribagh a well-developed and model town with public support.
